Who We Are
Republic of Movement (RoM) is a Miami-based community that guides students along the development of movement practice, per the philosophy and method of our teacher Ido Portal.
It would currently seem that the only way to practice movement is through specific disciplines – gymnastics, dance, fitness, martial arts, etc. But there is another way – broader, more general, and connecting the dots, exploring the space between the disciplines.
That’s what we’re after: we want to create a practice around movement itself. It appeals to us, because that’s who we are, people pulled in by big pictures.
But movement is an incomprehensibly large universe, and we run into problems, dilemmas and obstacles. Lack of clarity, lack of community, lack of process. Not knowing where to start, what to aim for, who to practice with, when to shift gears, etc.
So we create a setting in which we can resolve those questions and paradoxes.
Our mentor is Ido Portal. For over a decade, we’ve been studying under him – workshops, coaching, camps, internships, and currently the mentorship program. In the mentorship program, we meet with Ido and a small group of other mentees throughout the year. He has guided us in the opening of our space and provides critical feedback for our classes.
Classes are a bit of a journey, weaving through different topics, tasks, games, challenges. In one moment you might be precisely copying a movement pattern, and the next moment you’ll be doing some hard strength work. To rest you might work on improving how you move your spine and back. Afterwards you could be inverting, rolling, and crawling, or playing a game between two partners. In the end, you might do some somatic work so you can recover, or maybe sit and practice stillness.
What classes are not: NOT a mish-mash, NOT cross-training. The content is not arbitrarily selected so as to deliver a confusing stimulus to the body. Classes are meticulously structured, planned with an eye for where things are going – classes are always in the context of longer term projects.
